Blood Pressure & Midwifery
Taking blood pressure is a vital part of Midwifery care. It helps monitor the health and well being of both the pregnant person and their baby throughout the antenatal, labour and postnatal periods.
Regular blood pressure checks can identify early signs of hypertensive conditions, such as gestational-hypertension and pre-eclampsia, which, if left untreated can lead to serious complications. Pre-eclampsia, in particular can develop rapidly and may lead to complications such as organ damage or preterm birth if not managed appropriately. Accurate and consistent monitoring blood pressure also supports informed decision making and timely referrals to specialist care when needed. This aligns with the standards set by the New Zealand College of Midwives
